A moment in Eiffel Tower's glow
On this bridge I look below
On dark surface of River Seine
My heart sunk deep in undertow
This passer-by must feel my pain
They sense the thoughts I entertain
But stays the course and on his way
The full moon's glow begins to fade
A week ago, on the 10th of May
How appropriate, Ascension Day
On this bridge where I now keep
We first met with hearts in play
So quiet now I begin to weep
Tears fall into currents deep
Up from which the voices creep
Calling up to 'take the leap'
The sun cast long shadows
On that clear blue day we met
I was soft gazing on Square Du Vert Galant
When a gentle breeze carried the faint sounds
Of a woman sobbing
I found her leaning on Henry The 4th
Dabbing sad eyes with a silk handkerchief
It was scented fresh lilac
I asked if I could help
I was startled when she tucked her arm in mine
Leaning gently in and led me on a solemn walk
Down and through the triangle-shaped island park
I asked if she would like to talk
But she did not respond
So I did my best to silently comfort her
But she did agree and met me the next day
In the village of Montmartre
And though she was not crying
Her dark eyes, and quiet sadness
Well, they stole my heart
I convinced her to meet me again
Over the next few days
And was nearly brought to tears
The first time I heard her laugh
Last night in Moulin Cafe
And then today mere hours ago
We climbed the steps to Sacre Coeur
And watched the sunset over Paris
A gust of wind swept up and swirled around us
And we drew close and kissed
Then I looked into her eyes
About to say those words
But she suddenly turned and ran away
I look up toward the star lit skies
Through watery prism of weary eyes
And though I plead with true belief
There are no answers to my cries
Passers by must know my grief
Must sense my need for some relief
But cross this bridge and on their way
Toward late night dinner aperitif
A week ago, on the 10th of May
How appropriate, Ascension Day
On this spot where I now keep
We first met with hearts in play
But now from River Seine does creep
Up to me the fate I reap
Whispering up from darkness deep
Leading way to twilight sleep
I was stunned at first as she ran from me
I was in shock as I watched her slip away
Down the steps and through some trees
I'd searched the past few hours
Until mere moments ago
Here half way across Pont Neuf
I looked down to see her there
In the triangle park over Galant Square
She was sitting on the river bank
Writing the last line of a note
With quill and a bottle of ink
I ran towards Henry The 4th and the descending stairs
The words were reading to burst from my lips
I love you!
It was passion, it wasn't planned
An unwitting act of a jealous hand
Stressed and taught around her throat
Til her life drained into river sand
Below this bridge she lies afloat
In shadow unseen by passing boat
I read again in disbelief
These words in her handwritten note
It was this note that caused me grief
Tucked inside perfumed kerchief
To a new love she felt so deep
It was to him this letter, brief
I look back down to where she keep
Up form now the morbid creep
Pulling me down to take the leap
Just a moment now before I sleep
