She awakens me with her laughter,
head resting on my shoulder,
the caress of her hand on mine
I turn my head in this dimly lit cabin
to kiss her forehead,
but, of course, she's not there,
an hallucination brought on by
the mesmerizing hum of engines at cruising altitude.
I lift the shade and it takes my breath.
It's 2am on the dawn of Christmas Eve
as the plane skims the stratosphere
here, high above the Atlantic.
Far below is a floor of cloud stretching the horizon
reflecting the light of a slim crescent moon
in undulating shades of sleepy blue.
It seems like a virgin snow.
Above me are brilliant stars
laid against a jeweler's velvet,
the original lights of Christmas.
The trip is Kennedy to Heathrow.
She probably knows the true aim of my trip,
that I have a diamond straight from these heavens
to her heart.

My eyelids fall
and the hypnagogic creeps in once again.
Her giggles echo.
I feel her breath on my ear,
the warmth of her hand on my chest
radiating deep into my heart.
Her spirit has come to be here with me.
An explosion below buckles the floor and all awaken.
The lights flicker and yellow masks fall from above.
Then all goes dark.
I reach for the oxygen
But she gently guides my hand back down
The window reveals an absurd angle towards virgin snow.
But I am calm.
She has come for me, to spirit me away.

We are floating together gently over London.
We hover over the glowing orbs of Oxford Street,

and witness our wedding.
