It hits me as a pounding heart
As a rush of goose bumps
Over my scalp
And I bolt up out of my seat
Eyes wide...

She's there
Rushing to catch a flight...
That familiar blue dress
That shiny auburn hair
Bouncing on slender shoulders
Yellow heels clacking as she runs

I take three quick steps
And then stop...
Again, It’s not her
It's the third time this morning
That I thought I'd seen her
It's been so long, and not one regret
Then today it hits me in waves.

I stumble backwards
And land in my seat
I look to my wrist
There’s nothing there
but I hear the ticking
I feel its echo...

I rub my eyes
And scrub my forehead
And then hide
My face in my hands...

I picture what only seems like yesterday
As we stood together
Under that oak by Rockefeller Hall...
She was the happiest girl
She saw the world in my eyes
But it was that fresh spring morning
That I trampled her optimism
With news that I was leaving without her
That I needed to travel light...
I can still see those pained eyes
The streaming tears...
I left her there crying,
As I coldly stepped away
And across the green

I raise my head again...
I can't recall what airport I'm in
There have been so many
I stand and walk from the gate
And as I pass the duty-free shop
Something catches my eye
I walk into the store
And pick the familiar bottle
From the display... Chanel 31
I raise it and I catch its scent...
I've never felt such a panic
Such a desperate need
To turn back time...
To the happiest girl I ever knew...
